About

Approach:

I believe that meaningful change begins by creating a strong and authentic connection to help my clients feel comfortable to open up and explore difficulties. I work in a collaborative manner with clients to help them grow and actualize their potential. I believe that insight, seeing oneself fully, and bringing the unconscious to the conscious is imperative to healing and flourishing. Moreover, I help clients recognize the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to work through difficulty.

I work in a goal-oriented manner and use one’s goals to customize therapy. Additionally, I teach healthy coping skills; I explore and work through obstacles to progress, identify unhealthy defense mechanisms and replace them with healthy, effective skills. I consider myself a life-long learner, and am dedicated to staying current with the latest research to inform my evidence-based approach in therapy.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I change.”

~Carl Rogers

Style:

I approach therapy with an experience that invites clients’ full, genuine self into the room in order to explore themselves and heal. I value building a trusting relationship with my clients, by creating a warm, accepting, and non-judgmental connection. I celebrate all unique identities, and value authenticity, connectivity, and insight. My goal is to help clients transform the therapeutic experience into concrete and meaningful changes in their lives. I believe that we all are in a constant state of change and becoming, which is reflected in my personal life and my work with clients.

Theoretical Orientation:

My orientation is a result of self-reflection, didactic training, and experiential practice. I intentionally integrate psychodynamic, interpersonal and multicultural approaches in my work. I customize my interventions to the individual and usually incorporate mindfulness and CBT/DBT techniques in my work. I strive to guide clients to perceive and understand how past conflicts and defenses impact one’s current interpersonal attachments, and highlight how defenses that have been useful to the client in the past may now be unhelpful now. I consider how identity and social factors impact and perpetuate a client’s distress and concerns. I think the capacity to form healthy relationships, while also understanding one’s needs, are critical to exploring how people develop and function.

Personal Life:

I honor what it takes to build a trusting relationship or to choose the right therapist-  and for some that might require learning more about me. I am generally open to clients’ questions in order for them to be vulnerable. In that spirit, below is some information I am happy to openly share.

I am a Cuban-American born in Miami, Fl. I have lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas as well. I am passionate about music – I play the violin, I love attending concerts, and have been involved with the underground DIY music scene since high school. I love to kayak, swim, and workout. I enjoy exploring/traveling, cooking, reading, thrifting, and the arts.

I believe that my own process of facing adversity and grappling with difficulty parallels the work I do with clients by empowering clients to confront their struggles, learn to accept, even celebrate who they are, while still wanting to grow. I have a profound respect for the therapeutic process and each individual. I regard myself fortunate to explore my clients’ difficulties and be a part of their growth. In all, I cannot imagine a career more meaningful or fulfilling.
